THE LOST ISLAND

Many Islands are deemed to have been lost in the sea. In such a way, we have seen about Kumari Kandam. India shares its boundary with China, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc. A boundary that connects India and Sri Lanka are Dhanushkodi. Mainly people call it Ghost Town.

BRITISH

British in India has made many pros and cons as well. British has built their signature building in some places where they lived. British entered India for only trading purposes but that in turn converted into conquering India. Dhanushkodi is deemed as a tourist spot with three sides of the water. The land of Dhanushkodi is just 45 meters in breadth. During British ruling in India, Britishers loved the city due to the sea look and perpetual wind all the time within the island. Britishers have also established a railway path to travel from Chennai Egmore to Colombo in Sri Lanka.

To go to Colombo we need to cross the sea between India and Sri Lanka but how could the train go directly to Colombo? Britishers charged 80 rupees for this travel. From Chennai Egmore via Rameshwaram, the train stops in Dhanshkodi. And then from Dhanushkodi endpoint boats take passengers to the Sri Lanka border. From there train picks people and drops in Colombo. This trip only costs 80 rupees. Dhanushkodi had a railway station for 105 years. Nature from Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi freezes our eyes in the place you see. You couldn't take it away. Dhaushkodi is roughly 20-24 km from Rameshwaram.

British built many churches, buildings in Dhaushkodi. Even religious temples were also built there. December 17, 1964, is the starting of the destruction of the island. As the Indian Ocean is rich in Cyclones, a new cyclone was formed on December 17, 1964. December 23, 1964 people all over the Dhanushkodi were having a good sleep after their work was done. Rain makes noise from roof and sea jumps high than usual but people predicted that it would be a normal day like before. Nature's hunger took over people's beliefs. Waves reached 25 ft high and started destroying the island, buildings, monuments, and people. Two had waked up 5 minutes before this cyclone attack. They couldn't find where they are during the cyclone attack. It is full of dark and couldn't predict what is happening around them. They confirmed that their life has ended. Fortunately, Nature's Hunger didn't taste them. A huge wave carried them and made them hit a rock. Until the sunrise, they managed to stay there. Their friends, relatives are floating in the water. Nearly 1800 people in Dhanushkodi died. Even a train from Chennai carried students from Chennai, Madurai, and Ramanathapuram and traveling towards Dhanushkodi. Only 5 minutes left to reach the Dhanushkodi Railway Station. Waiting for the signal in Pamban bridge. The cyclone waves carried it towards it and buried the train inside the water. 800 passengers have died. The two-side wave ruined a city completely.

Tamil Nadu Government announced that this land is a land that is unfit for habitation. So, many people moved out and settled in other parts of Tamil Nadu. Some fishermen stayed there and started their routine. A large island is now just a piece of land that is 45 meters in breadth. The remains of churches, building temples, and houses are seen there.

People started making rumors about this Dhanushkodi. If we entered the ruined churches, we could hear the screaming of people and even sounds of high waves even when the sea is calm are some famous rumors. This made Dhanushkodi a Ghost Town. For some reason, the Government has also allowed tourist visits only from morning 5:00 am to evening 5:00 pm.

Vehicles are not allowed till the end of the island, only jeeps are allowed to take tourists till the end. The remains of the Dhanushkodi railway path are found there.
