WHAT IS STERLITE?
Sterlite is a copper manufacturing industry owned by Vedanta Resources Limited. It had its first industry in Maharashtra after getting rejected by Gujarat and Goa government. Vedanta Resources Limited is owned by Anil Agarwal.
Who is Anil Agarwal?
Anil Agarwal is the son of a small aluminum conductor businessman.
He joined his father's business after his education without further continuing to university. He was interested in searching for career opportunities in Mumbai. So, he left his birthplace (Patna).
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
He commenced up a company called Vendata in London with his mates.
After advancing this company, he started imagining the copper production industry which he wished to start in his birth country(India). He asked permission for beginning his industry in Gujarat and Goa. But for his bad time, he didn't get any of these places. Finally started in Mumbai (Ratnagiri). However, this place also didn't give him good luck. His hope didn't fall. He tried with other states too. For his hope and ability, he got the land of Tamils that is Tamil Nadu.
POLITICAL LEADERS
J Jayalalithaa was the Former Chief Minister of 1994. She permitted to construct his industry in Tuticorin(Thoothucudi). The election was held in 1995 in which M. Karunanidhi became the Chief Minister who also gave his consent to construct the industry.
VIOLATING THE RULES
As per Pollution Control Board, the industry must be positioned 30km away from the Gulf of Mannar, a 25m green belt must be organized around the industry and there shouldn't be any farming land or any arable land nearby the industry. The actual reality was, the company located only 14km away from the Gulf of Mannar, didn't create a green belt around the industry, didn't check with arable land or any other farming land nearby it.
HEALTH OF PEOPLE
Suddenly the health of the people began getting worse day by day. In 1998 Neri filed a case in high court regarding the release of Sulphur Dioxide which created, bronchitis, lung cancer, skin cancer, and many other respiratory problems. The stiffness of Sulphur Dioxide was very high which could also create eye and throat irritation. The death rate in Tuticorin reached high due to cancer. The industry was fastened for some days. The case was taken to the Supreme court by Sterlite and got approval to run the industry after 25 days shutdown.
GAS LEAKAGE
On March 23, 2013, due to a maintenance defect, sulfur dioxide leakage started spreading across Tuticorin by 2:30. Around 7:30 sulfur dioxide saturated Pearl city making it a contaminated city. People started feeling breathing problems, eye irritation, and throat irritation too. The only moment which was not covered by the media was eventually got into the matter of consideration after this circumstance. Again the case went to the Supreme Court as there was no proof the industry said that it could be also from a nearby industry ( SPIC, THERMAL PLANT). Sterlite again reopened the manufacturing. Sterlite not only produces sulfur dioxide, but it also releases many other gases such as Arsenic, Cadmium, etc.
WATER INSTEAD OF CHEMICAL
Sea creatures started disappearing day by day due to chemical discharge in water bodies. The people's objection was still going on. On the other hand, Sterlite got its approval for expansion. There was a chemical pond around the industry that could kill the fertility of the soil. The acid spilled there could even erode the cement. They had built a sand mountain which is 10ft high furthermore scattered thorny dry plants before that so nobody could enter the place. For extra security, there were 10 to 15 people for defense.
WHY STERLITE IS OPEN NOW?
Under this covid- 19 circumstances, we see the requirement for oxygen in every state in India. Even the deaths increase due to oxygen deficiency. As Sterlite can provide 1100 tons of liquid oxygen, every party had a meeting with Edapadi Palani Swami (who was the chief minister during that period). Getting the conclusion, they decided to open Sterlite for just 4 months for only producing oxygen. Sterlite already had setup for liquid oxygen which was used in copper smelting furnace. The Supreme court has ordered Sterlite to install compression and botting plants to convert liquid oxygen to gaseous oxygen. Installing this setup takes around 6 months. Sterlite has produced 200 tons of liquid oxygen. The remaining 900 tons of oxygen will be produced in the form of gaseous oxygen. As per the government, the priority of oxygen will be for the Land of Tamils.
ELECTRICITY
A crew led by Collector SenthilRaj inspected the Sterlite industry yesterday and approved to provide electricity and water connection for the production of oxygen. With an electricity connection, the machines will be tested before producing oxygen. Within 7 days, the Sterlite industry will be proficient in producing medical oxygen. By evening, electricity and water connection was provided.
