HISTORY
History is not only within a piece of paper or a book. It is more than what we know. Most of the memoir is ascertained under the soil. Digging the earth and finding new materials that don't even exist in the world at this century makes you bewildered. Like so, Arikamedu history is one of the important histories that has been still waiting for international recognition.
ARIKAMEDU
Arikamedu is an archaeological site, 4kms away from Pondicerry. This city was just had a ruined french building. A man who was traveling through this route had a stop in this place and went to this beautiful spot. Suddenly, he found a gold coin. He handed this over to the archaeological team and after looking deep into its shape, they concluded that this coin belongs to the Roman empire Augustus Caesar period. They came to this conclusion as the coin had Augustus Caesar's photo carved in it. Rewinding back to history, 200 years ago British and french entered India and conquered it slowly. They established missionaries, convent schools, etc. Every country had a habit of constructing their nature of building in the places they conquer. Victoria Mahal, India Gate are some examples of their buildings. But when we rewind back to 2000 years, Greeks entered India before other countries. Their motto was different from British and French. They considered India as a culture, technology, and wealth-filled place equal to or better than theirs. So, they planned to have a trade link and partnership with them. Greek made a trade with India and both shared their culture and technology with each other. Arikamedu was one of the port cities for trade in India. They also built many buildings, monuments and shared their coins. In 1930, Mortimer Wheeler a British archaeologist started excavating Arikamedu. He was in search of knowing world history. He found a different type of material that was in with some people in that place. So, he further asked the place from where they extracted. They informed us that they took the material from the building in Arikamedu. He moved to Arikamedu and researched the stone found there. Much new material was found by him in Arikamedu as he started digging the soil in. He found a Greek Wine bottle used by greeks to create wine using saltwater and grape juice. Greek gold coin, Chola Period Coins, table, chair, and cutleries. Wheeler started writing a book about this Arikamedu and its rich history. Even he searched for Arikamedu trade in Greek historic books. Arikamedu trade was also written in Greek historic books and even greeks trade was also written in some ancient books in India.

After writing this book, he concluded that this place is a well-industrialized city before it was ruined. Wheeler's death gave an end to Arikamedu. Recently when his research book reached many archaeologists, Arikamedu again came into the picture. But still, international recognition is not given as like Kizhadi.
